Chris holds degrees in law and arts (history) from the University of Auckland. He was admitted to the bar in 2008. Chris started his career as a Crown Prosecutor in Auckland. There, he specialised in prosecuting serious crime.
In 2012, Chris co-founded the firm Moala Merrick in Manukau, specialising in criminal defence and youth advocacy. Since May 2017, Chris has practised as a Barrister in those same areas. Chris acts on both private and legal aid instruction. On criminal legal aid matters Chris is categorised to act in all cases (PAL1 - PAL4).
Chris is also a Court appointed Youth Advocate appearing as counsel for children and young people charged with serious criminal offending.
He is of Ngāti Manaia, Ngāti Wai (ko Te Whakapiko te hapū), Tongan (Ma'ufanga, Niua), and New Zealand European descent. He is also a speaker of Te Reo Māori.
Outside of the law, Chris is a keen musician, surfer, and enjoys time with family and friends.
